Renovating historic buildings is both an art and a science, especially on Boston’s North Shore, where iconic structures like the Essex County Club and Hamilton Town Hall have stood for over a century. These buildings often feature architectural quirks, such as doors that lead nowhere or materials that have aged beyond their functional lifespan. Restoring them requires balancing modern needs with timeless craftsmanship.
At WORKS, we specialize in the thoughtful renovation of historic properties. Our team takes pride in solving complex challenges while maintaining architectural integrity and historical value. Two standout projects, Essex County Club in Manchester-by-the-Sea and Hamilton Town Hall in Hamilton, MA, exemplify our approach.
Case Study: Essex County Club – Manchester-by-the-Sea, MA
This prestigious golf course has hosted major events like the Curtis Cup and U.S. Women’s Amateur Championships. Its historic clubhouse, however, posed a unique problem: a door that led nowhere, disrupting both aesthetics and functionality.
Our design solution was inspired by the original architecture. We eliminated the unused door and introduced two new archways that mirrored the original central archway perfectly. One archway now houses a custom display case, while the others create a balanced, elegant flow through the space. These handcrafted additions were built using traditional techniques, preserving the clubhouse’s original charm while enhancing usability.
Case Study: Hamilton Town Hall – Hamilton, MA
Built in 1898, the Hamilton Town Hall is a cornerstone of the community, but time has taken its toll. The building suffered from rotting floors, cracked trim, and structural wear. Our renovation team repaired and reinforced the affected areas, carefully matched historical paint colors and flooring, and addressed the root causes of deterioration.
Today, the town hall continues to serve residents safely and beautifully, thanks to meticulous restoration that respects its legacy.
