At today’s Lunch & Learn, we had the pleasure of hearing from Robert Trim, co-founder of Stalgrid, a company that specializes in custom home technology. The session gave us fresh ideas on how smart technology can be woven seamlessly into beautifully designed spaces.
We learned how automation can go far beyond convenience. A single wall button labeled “Movie Time” can lower shades, drop a hidden projector screen, dim the lights, and start your favorite streaming service. Even calendar-based events can trigger lights, music, and other settings automatically — making everyday living feel effortless.
We learned the importance of keeping technology design-forward. Smart systems should enhance a space, not overwhelm it. That means working with builders, carpenters, and designers early to integrate solutions — from recessed TVs in custom millwork to LED strips embedded in cabinetry for a clean finish.
We also learned about Stalgrid’s partnership with HGC Millwork in Newburyport. Together, they create a true “one-stop shop” for custom spaces: HGC brings the craftsmanship, and Stalgrid delivers the technology. Whether it’s building a custom valance for motorized shades or designing a full cabinetry lighting plan, this kind of collaboration means nearly anything is possible.
We learned that using reliable systems makes all the difference. Stalgrid works with Lutron for lighting control, Savant for home automation, and other high-quality audio, shading, and climate solutions, ensuring clients get dependable, future-ready results.
One of our biggest takeaways was how they approach clients: by asking what they know they want, then opening the door to possibilities they may not have considered. As Robert said, “You don’t know what you don’t know until it’s brought to you.”
Stalgrid’s Newburyport showroom is now fully outfitted with motorized shades, custom lighting, speakers, and complete automation. We’re excited to visit, explore more ideas, and continue finding ways to combine craftsmanship with technology to make homes not just smart, but a better place to live.
