Open porches should be treated very much like decks when it comes to winterization. Like decks, the boards need to be treated with water sealant or upgraded to a material that is resistant to weather. If your porch has screens, now is the time to cover the screens with plastic on the inside to protect both the screens and the porch itself. Custom-made, reusable plastic panels are also available to protect your porch from the weather. Or you can consider renovating the open porch to create an enclosed porch or sun room.
An uninsulated enclosed porch or sun room raises the heating bill and lowers the comfort of most of the house during winter. If the ceiling is left uninsulated, the room above is going to receive that most dreaded of labels: the coldest room in the house. By insulating the ceiling and floors of the enclosed porch or sunroom, and by using insulating calk around the base of the walls, floor and windows, you prevent drafts from creeping into your home.
