Shower upgrades have practical advantages, too; poorly installed or aging showers are a primary cause of water damage in older homes. Further, if any family member has trouble entering the home’s current shower, an upgrade can easily include a ledge-free, lip-free entrance and a shower bench. A shower bench is also a nice addition to a steam shower or one with multiple showerheads at different levels.
My chief concerns when working on any shower project are the waterproofing, vapor barrier and leveling. With all showers, but particularly with steam showers, we want to make sure that no moisture can escape to damage walls, ceilings, studs or joists. The shower should drain well and provide a sure footing for anyone using it.
If a complete renovation isn’t in the budget, the easiest upgrades center on the showerhead: messaging, handheld, rain or panel (a line of water jets mounted down the wall). Another easy change is to install a curved shower rod, giving you a little extra elbow room.
