Before construction begins, you may want to move your most precious possessions out the way in an attic or other area that will not be affected by construction. If your home restoration or renovation is extensive enough, you may want to rent a storage unit to keep items outside of the home entirely. A priceless collection of books, ceramics or paintings should be re-housed well away from the construction area if only because traffic in and out of the home will inevitably let in dust, temperature changes and sunlight that you normally block.
On the day that my team starts on a home restoration or renovation project, our first action is to safeguard the furnishings. We move what we can and protect the rest a variety of coverings suitable for furniture and floors, secured with painter “PAINT” NEEDS TO SAY “TAPE” because masking tape or duct tape can harm hardwoods. We create safe pathways to prevent accidental damage to furnishings when we are carrying materials into the home or from room to room. We cover doorways to prevent dust and debris from migrating from one room to another.
If renovations extend to the outside of your home—or if we are entering through a porch or a deck—we protect the outside too, including plants.
Daily cleanup is automatic and thorough at WORKS. But most homeowners also like to clean up themselves after the home renovation or restoration project finishes. Here are a few hints to help you:
Construction dust can scratch wood so once construction is complete, vacuum first rather than trying to rub or wipe furniture and floors to get them clean.
Walls that haven’t been repainted and light fixtures and ceiling fans that weren’t replaced can be cleaned with a damp towel or a vacuum.
The upholstery attachment on your vacuum is great for cleaning upholstered furniture, mattresses and drapes.
You might want to replace air filters; they can get clogged during construction.
Try not to obsess about dust during construction. Once the project is over, everything will clean up quickly and return to normal.
Before, during and after construction, the WORKS team and I are careful to protect your personal belongings. You can help by placing easily moved possessions safely in another room and by recognizing that construction projects unavoidably generate dust and grime. Our task is to use the best materials and judgment to keep your possessions and furnishings safe, and we continue to succeed at just that for homeowners throughout the North Shore of Boston.
