We’ve been introducing the WORKS team members to you in these blogs, and I thought it was time to introduce myself, Jesse DeBenedictis.

I grew up on the North Shore, and you might have seen me around as a kid. When I was in eighth grade, I started my own yard cleaning and landscaping business (sort of skipping over the lemonade stand stage). I worked all through high school and then went to Champlain College in Vermont for hotel and restaurant management. But I always liked carpentry. In college, I even built my own desk out of scrap, all curved surfaces, a cool art project. I built the ornate bar at the Franklin Cafe in Gloucester.

After college, I worked for other people in and around construction for a while, including carpet installation and general carpentry. I loved masonry, I loved landscaping. Then I went out on my own as a carpenter, renovator and builder.

This brings us to WORKS. One day I was reading about how it’s not a good thing if you are your entire business. If anything happens to you, your business will fail. That worried me; I had a family by then. Also I was very busy and needed help. I hired a project manager but I hired the wrong person and he nearly ruined the business. Ever since then, I’ve worked on creating a strong, trustworthy, talented team.

My job is to overlook the business and make sure everything is in tip top shape. I make sure that if any one person isn’t around, someone else can immediately take over on the job. As a general contractor and a leader, you have to be constantly creative and on your toes. It’s fun.

My life as a general contractor and business owner is on the North Shore of Boston. My home is here, with my wife and kids. The people whose homes we work on are here, and my team is here, the account executive, carpenters, painters, production manager, project manager, and office staff. This is the North Shore home and business I always wanted.
