One of the reasons I love the North Shore of Boston is the environment: the woods, lakes, rivers, fields, and ocean. Keeping that environment safe is a priority for anyone who lives on the North Shore, and it gives us empathy for other environments around the globe.

If you want a kitchen that is eco-friendly, I and the entire WORKS team stand with you. Here are some of my suggestions for a great kitchen renovation or remodel that is also green:

  1. Where possible, recycle old cabinets, counter tops and floors by resurfacing, refinishing or repainting.

  2. Choose new cabinets that use renewable woods (such as bamboo) or wood and wood products certified by the Forest Stewardship Council, which promotes “environmentally sound, socially beneficial and economically prosperous management of the world’s forests.” The FSC strives to minimize the use of illegally harvested, over-harvested or genetically modified wood and wood “harvested in violation of traditional and civil rights.”

  3. Choose new countertops and backsplashes from a variety of eco-friendly recycled or renewable materials, such as glass, bamboo, concrete and reclaimed wood from old buildings.

  4. Choose new flooring made from recycled or renewable materials, such as linoleum, bamboo, eucalyptus and cork.

  5. Purchase ENERGY STAR lights and appliances which “save energy and protect our climate through superior energy efficiency.” ENERGY STAR is a voluntary program by the US Environmental Protection Agency. Massachusetts offers rebates for buying certain ENERGY STAR appliances through the MassSave program .

  6. Build recycling containers into your kitchen cabinets or kitchen island to make recycling easy and efficient.

  7. After the renovation or remodel, shop for accessories that increase the eco-friendliness of your kitchen; for example, cloth napkins, pans that are made without PFOA (perfluorooctanoic acid), green cleaners, reusable cleaning cloths or recycled plastic trash liners.

The WORKS can offer suggestions for finding green materials and incorporating eco-friendly approaches in your kitchen remodel or renovation. Contact us today.
