If your walls or ceilings show dimpling, cracking, discoloration, holes, gouges or buckling, then there is a problem that can only be solved by removing part or all of the drywall.

Repairing ceilings is more difficult than repairing walls, in part because the drywall must line up properly with the ceiling joists; otherwise, the ceiling will look uneven. In the case of both walls and ceilings, enough space must be left between sheets of drywall to enable the underlying wood to expand and contract properly without causing the drywall to gap or buckle.

Common do-it-yourself mistakes in replacing drywall include placing screws too far into the surface of the drywall, making errors in measurement so that electrical receptacles (for example) don’t line up with holes in the drywall and oversanding the drywall mud. Those mistakes can weaken the drywall and may lead to early cracking or to a less than attractive end product.

As drywall experts, the WORKS team knows that four tasks are critical to the success of any drywall repair:

  1. Fixing the underlying problem, whether a door is pounding holes into the wall or a leak is causing mold.

  2. Preparing the surface with the best materials, including a good quality sealer/primer so that the paint adheres properly after the repair is made.

  3. Preventing the spread of dust and debris and cleaning up every day, especially if there are vulnerable residents (children, animals and anyone with respiratory problems).
