We began the deck repairs by pressure washing and re-fastening two downspouts that had fallen off. One of the important aspects of maintaining a deck is to keep water off it, and that means making sure the gutters above it are working properly.

We sanded the deck and the railings; nailed down loose boards on the deck; and identified and fixed loose spindles on the railings. We reinforced the railing posts with truss screws, filled holes and caulked seams. We found some rot and cleared it out, then strengthened the area with epoxy.

Once we were sure Lexington deck was safe, we concentrated on the appearance by painting the railings and risers with three coats and by painting and coating the deck. The results were well worth the effort.

If you want to quickly check your own deck for needed deck repairs:

  1. Push on railings and banisters to make sure they are secure.

  2. If the deck is older, make sure the railing meets the minimum height of 36 inches and that railings are no more than 4 inches apart to protect children and small animals from squeezing through.

  3. Look for sagging and visible signs of rot. Try to poke a screw driver into suspect wood; if it goes in at least a quarter inch, the wood may be rotted.

  4. Look for pooling water. This is a sign that the flashing may need to be replaced.

  5. Check for rusted or loose fasteners, especially fasteners that attach the deck to the house.

  6. Visible mildew or wear is a sign that the deck coating may need replacement.

The season for outdoor work on the North Shore of Boston is very short. We’re already taking orders for outside painting, deck repairs and deck construction. So please contact WORKS soon if you want a place on our schedule.
