Okay, confession time: one reason I enjoy being a construction contractor is that you don’t have to pick out matching clothes for work; you wear what’s comfortable and practical for tearing down walls and building rooms that people enjoy. But as a painting contractor, I appreciate colors that work well together when painting the exteriors and interiors of homes, like the seasonal colors that appear in nature.
Whether your own color sense favors the deep greens and reds of summer, oranges and browns of fall, whites and blacks of winter or yellows and blues of spring, your home will get a lift if you paint it with nature’s colors. Choosing seasonal, natural colors for your interior or exterior painting automatically gives you a palette of colors that match.
Take spring for example. Different shades of lavender come together in flowers and different shades of green appear as trees begin to leaf. Those colors work in harmony in nature and they also harmonize for painting the interior or exterior of your home. For interior painting, you may use different spring colors in different rooms; or paint one color on walls and another on trim; or you may paint a feature wall in a color that stands out in nature as well (for example, a cherry and raspberry red, based on the colors of spring fruit).
Now another confession: the hot color trend in paint last year was grey. I like grey, especially as a serene background for stronger, bolder colors in furniture and accessories. You may like it best the other way around: grey furniture and accessories give you the freedom to paint your rooms with vibrant color. This year it looks like green will be the hot color trend in paint. But the bottom line is, as a painting contractor, I firmly believe that trends should not stand in your way when it comes to painting the exterior or interior of your home. After all, trends have never stood in the way of Mother Nature.
