But even before you choose a contractor, here are five practical tips for preparing for your North Shore home renovation:
Know why you are embarking on the renovation or remodel of your home. Clear goals (creating extra space, fixing structural problems, updating, preparing for resale) will not only help you in making choices later on, they will also help the general contractor and team to deliver exactly what you want.
Because so many choices are available for everything from insulation to cabinet knobs, make a list of your top priorities. There are many valid choices, but few will meet all your criteria all the time. Is it more important for your home remodel or renovation that your choices be child-proof, eco-friendly, within budget, in a particular style, likely to give a high return when you sell?
Prepare a standard list of questions for each licensed general contractor you interview and at least a rough drawing of what you want to accomplish in the project. That way you know that every potential contractor is envisioning the same home improvement project and that they are giving you comparable information.
Research the building codes, zoning regulations and inspection requirements that affect your renovation or remodel. In the planning stages of your home improvement project, your licensed general contractor can help you navigate the building codes, regulations and other requirements.
Plan to be good to yourself and your family. Home renovations and remodels upset normal routines. Pets may be happier in a safer location; children may need extra watching and reassurance. As long as you stay in touch with the construction team, you may all benefit from a day or two away from the chaos.
